Description: In the main foyer of St Laurences National School in Crookstown, a remarkable ceramic mural spans the main stairwell, encapsulating the spirit and heritage of the school and its surrounding community. Commissioned by the Board of Management , this expansive artwork stretches an impressive 16 meters, becoming a central piece in the school’s new site near the river Greese.
Composed from flat relief ceramic shapes, the artwork is more than just an adornment; it is a narrative woven from the school’s rich history and the vibrant life of Crookstown. Each ceramic piece is meticulously printed and impressed with coloured slips and glazes, creating a lively ‘flowing river’ that represents the continuous growth and connectivity of the community.
The concept was deeply influenced by the input of the school’s students and staff, who participated in workshops to brainstorm and integrate elements that resonate with their experiences and aspirations. From local landmarks to popular activities like singing and sailing, each segment of the mural offers a glimpse into the community’s shared memories and dreams.
Illustrations on the ceramic surface depict a wide array of subjects including music, art, travel, and fun activities like blowing bubbles and looking at clouds. This not only illustrates the diverse interests of the students but also underscores the importance of creativity in education. The mural stands as a testament to the school’s commitment to fostering an environment where imagination and learning flourish together.
By marrying art with education, the mural at St Laurences National School not only beautifies the space but also serves as a constant source of inspiration for everyone who passes by, reminding them of the vibrant history and the creative potential that lies within their community.
