Description: The aim of the art commission is to provide an opportunity for the selected artist to create a new piece of work, developed through workshops with the pupils and staff and exploring the themes of ecology in the surrounding school area of Castletroy.
This art commission was informed by the discussions in the school workshops which focused on the importance of the biodiversity of the school location and the wildflowers, insects, mammals and birds that can found here.
Working on the wishes of the management, which was to introduce colour to the foyer area along with creating a dynamic artwork which could also be seen by parents from the entrance lobby, the ceramic elements flow out from a pillar, up along the two walls at 3m height. Background colours flow from yellows to greens and mauves reflecting the light of the west coast and it’s changing sky and the mountains behind Limerick.
The ceramic elements sway and flow along this changing colour-scape creating contrasting colours and shapes. Butterflies, birds, wild flowers, insects and mammals can be discovered, with hidden words among the shapes. This piece is meant to give the viewer many opportunities to uncover facts about the Castletroy hidden wildlife and to spark an interest in young people about the pleasures of discovering what is on their doorstep.
