The school was aiming to commission a set of artworks that were reflective of the spirit, diversity, and energy of the school. The proposed process involved the artist making new work as a central aspect of the commission and involved input from the pupils and the wider school community. The children were asked to design their idea of an art piece for the school. The dominant themes which arose were sport, music, books, the world, children, and the willow tree.

‘Barntown Breeze’ is a 12 m ceramic artwork in the entrance corridor which takes the form of a breeze blowing through Barntown. It is meant to inspire and encourage children in their choices about life and learning, whether that be through sport, reading, looking at cloud/stars, singing or playing music.

In the bustling corridors of St Laurences National School in Crookstown, a remarkable ceramic mural spans the main stairwell, encapsulating the spirit and heritage of the school and its surrounding community. Commissioned by the Board of Management, this expansive artwork stretches an impressive 16 meters, becoming a central piece in the school’s new site near the river Greese.
