The Arctic tern, sometimes called the sea swallow, is a summer visitor to Irish shores and spends its winter 8700 miles away near Antarctica. They come to breed at a few different locations, including Strangford Lough, RSPB Belfast Lough, Carlingford Lough, the Ards Peninsula and the Copeland Islands.
